Biochar looks like charcoal, but it works like a sponge for your soil. Wood waste is heated with little to no oxygen, so instead of burning, it breaks down into a porous carbon that resists decay for hundreds or even thousands of years. The idea is older than it sounds. Indigenous people in the Amazon were working charred material into the ground more than 2,500 years ago, creating pockets of dark, fertile earth that are still prized today. We make ours the same basic way, just with modern equipment.
It starts with feedstock: stumps, branches, pallets, framing scrap, and other clean wood waste that would otherwise be landfilled or burned. That material is heated to somewhere between 400 and 700 degrees Celsius with almost no oxygen, a process called pyrolysis. Starved of oxygen, the wood can’t combust. It transforms instead, into stable, carbon-rich biochar rather than smoke and ash. Once it gets going, the process even generates its own heat.
Biochar can be made in anything from a backyard kiln to an industrial rotary kiln.
